Ruben Amorim insists Man United squad must take responsibility for brutal job losses as Sir Jim Ratcliffe continues to wield the axe amid latest cost-cutting measures

Ruben Amroim has admitted he and Manchester United‘s players should feel responsible for job losses sweeping through Old Trafford.

United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is overseeing massive changes at the Premier League giants with more redundancies and increased ticket prices being considered to offset reported losses of £300million over the last three years.

Amorim’s team face Spurs on Sunday in the bottom half of the table but insists his squad mustn’t forget the 250 United employees who have already been laid off with another 100 under threat.

‘People are losing their jobs. It’s really important for us in the first-team, coaches and players, not to ignore it,’ declared the United boss.

‘We have to acknowledge that and the biggest problem is the football because we spend the money, we are not winning, we are not in the Champions League so the revenues are not the same.

‘We spent a lot of money in the past and now we have to be careful with the finances. We cannot rebuild the team the way we would like.

‘People are losing their jobs. Of course it’s hard to have that feeling of people safe in their job and it affects the environment.

United’s net spend since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 is more than £1.2billion without coming close to winning the Premier League title or Champions League.

They currently have wingers Anthony and Jadon Sancho – combined cost £150million – out on loan while £70million midfielder Casemiro has started only three of 13 Premier League games since Amorim arrived in November.

£72m striker Rasmus Hojlund has gone 14 matches without a goal whilst cost-cutting measures have been put in place in other areas including Sir Alex Ferguson’s ambassadorial role.

United also raised the cost of tickets for members to £66 earlier this season and removed concession prices.

Morale at the club among general employees is said to be low and asked if he felt it was the responsibility of his football department, a candid Amorim said: ‘Yes, and we have to change that.

‘The first part, what we should do is to win at Tottenham. That is the small step to try to help these people, to try not to push the prices of the tickets higher. We are responsible for that.’

United were restricted to signing £25million wing back Patrick Dorgu during the January transfer window as they attempt to stop hemorrhaging money.

Sancho is an example of United’s failure to find value for money. The England winger started only 41 Premier League games in three seasons before a fall-out with Erik ten Hag saw him join Chelsea on loan.

Amorim said he’s not even thinking about a possible return for the expensive winger.

‘I am really focussed on this season. We have a lot to do. A lot to improve,’ said the head coach. ‘We need to win games and then we will see next season.’
