Ruben Amorim has sent his successor at Sporting Lisbon, Joao Pereira, a good luck message ahead of their showdown with Arsenal.

Amorim kicked off his reign at Man United with a 1-1 draw at Ipswich on Sunday, having left Sporting earlier this month after four-and-a-half years as boss.

Pereira has stepped up from his role with Sporting’s reserve team to become the new head coach and will take charge of his first Champions League match against the Gunners in Lisbon on Tuesday night.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, the former Portugal defender revealed: ‘I spoke to Amorim before his debut, he sent me a message wishing me good luck and a great career.’

Pereira got off to a decent start as Sporting thrashed third division Amarante 6-0 in the Portuguese Cup with the prolific Viktor Gyokeres, a reported target for Amorim at United, again among the scorers.

‘I hope he puts in a good performance [against Arsenal] and scores goals,’ added Pereira, whose side lie second in the Champions League table having beaten Man City 4-1 in their last outing.

‘I think that before the game against City the players were already thinking that they could reach the play-offs.

‘The victory against City is a morale booster, but it only gives us three points. Against Arsenal it’s a little different. I think we’re ready.’
