Schuster on coming duel between Eggestein brothers: “Both reserved lots of tickets!”

Speaking at a Thursday pre-match presser, SC Freiburg head-coach Julian Schuster looked ahead to Saturday’s duel between the two Eggestein brothers Johannes and Maximilian at the Europa Park Stadion on Saturday afternoon.

After both departing their academy side SV Werder Bremen in 2021, Johannes (St. Pauli) and Maximilian Eggestein (SC Freiburg) are preparing for their first top flight duel against one another on Saturday in Breisgau’s Europa Park Stadion.

Maximilian (27) has been a regular staple in midfield since moving to Freiburg in the summer of 2021. Johannes (26) spent two abroad before returning to German football with Hamburg’s Kiezkicker in 2022.

Freiburg trainer Julian Schuster commented on the forthcoming matchup between the two siblings – both likely to start – at his Thursday pre-match presser.

The young SCF gaffer made no attempt to disguise his enthusiasm for both players, keeping a wide smile on his face while talking about the matter. Schuster himself once played alongside his brother.

“It’s naturally always a great story when it comes down to a duel between brothers,” Schuster said, “We have the ‘Schlottis’ [Nico and Keven Schlotterbeck in the top flight] and now the ‘Eggis’. It’s great for the families and parents.”

“I’m told that they both reserved a lot of tickets and will be well represented,” Schuster continued, “It’ll be very challenging [for them] to tune that out for 90 minutes.”

“I myself had a brother in the same team,” the coach went on, “Sure, it’s different whether one plays with or against. One still feels it when the other sends out a stray pass.”

“I’m nevertheless sure they’ll both be able to handle themselves just fine,” Schuster concluded.
