Eintracht Frankfurt confirmed that long-serving keeper Kevin Trapp will serve as the squad’s captain in the coming season on Friday.

After Oliver Glasner’s anointed skipper Sebastian Rode’s three-year-long captaincy, Eintracht Frankfurt will turn to veteran keeper Kevin Trapp to don the armband following Rode’s retirement after the conclusion of last season. The Hessen-based club confirmed the news late Thursday afternoon.

Trapp already served as Eintracht captain during his first stint with the club in the 2014/15 season. SGE trainer Dino Toppmöller has now restored the captaincy one decade later. Trapp current spell with Frankfurt has spanned six consecutive seasons.

“It’s an honor for me to be captain of Eintracht Frankfurt and to follow in the footsteps of Sebastian Rode and David Abraham,” Trapp noted in a club statement, “[They’ve] done an exemplary job for years. I was able to learn a lot from them. It’s an additional incentive for me to be successful together with my team-mates, the club and the fans.”

“Kevin Trapp is a real leader for us and he has played an important part in Eintracht’s development in recent years,” Toppmöller added, “Kevin not only leads the way on the pitch through his performance, but also through his attitude and approach. He has already shown his leadership even without the captain’s armband on his arm.”

Trapp’s fellow German national tam colleagues Robin Koch and Mario Götze will serve as the two deputies on the team leadership council. German football remains serious about enforcing the new rule that only captains are permitted to argue refereeing decisions with the match officials. In the even that a keeper wears the armband, deputies may also speak to the ref.
