Sol Campbell claims Arsenal’s Invincibles triumph ‘would have been recognised more’ if Liverpool or Man United had done it – and blasts ’embarrassing’ Premier League chiefs

Sol Campbell wants the Premier League to officially honour Arsenal‘s incredible ‘Invincibles’ season and claimed Manchester United and Liverpool would get more recognition if they had achieved the same feat.

The upcoming end of the season marks the 20-year anniversary since the Gunners became the only team in English football to go the entirety of the season unbeaten as they lifted the Premier League title.

Arsenal successfully navigated their way through 38 top-flight fixtures without being beaten on their way to the title, with no team able to replicate their stunning achievement since.

Former manager Arsene Wenger received a golden Premier League trophy in recognition of the achievement when he left the club in 2018, but club legend Campbell fumed it was ’embarrassing’ the players hadn’t received special awards as well.

‘It’s the only time this has been done for 100 years and I truly believe that if Manchester United or Liverpool had done it, it would have been recognised more,’ an annoyed Campbell told the Arsenal website.

‘It’s really embarrassing the players never received anything like that.

‘Maybe we will this year for the anniversary but something should be done.’ 

Campbell became an instant Arsenal icon after joining the club from arch rivals Tottenham in 2001 and going on to lift two Premier League crowns with the Gunners.

The former England international went on to make a total of 211 appearances for the Gunners in two separate spells at the club and claims his resilience made him the ‘best defender in the world’ at one stage of his career.

The 49-year-old believes his experience in dealing with Spurs fans who labelled him as ‘judas’ for making the switch across London only brought the best out of him as he went on to star under Wenger’s guidance. 

‘I’ve got a big heart and wide shoulders and my courage was such that it brought out the best in me,’ he continued.

‘My character suited this scenario. I was laser-focused. I was a different human being on the pitch.

‘That’s why I became, at one stage, the best defender in the world, pound for pound,’ added Campbell.
