Thomas Tuchel is in ‘pole position’ to become the next permanent England manager, according to Sky Sports.

Lee Carsley’s brief time as Three Lions interim boss is coming to an end. The former Ireland international took the reins after Gareth Southgate’s post-Euro 2024 departure but recently insisted that the “job deserves a world-class coach that has won trophies and been there and done it.”

A host of coaches have been linked with the England job, such as Pep Guardiola, Graham Potter and Eddie Howe. However, according to Sky Sports, former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is now in ‘pole position’ to land the coveted role.

Talks between Tuchel’s camp and the FA were initially reported by German outlet BILD last week. Some claimed that this was essentially to apply pressure on Man Utd to sack Erik ten Hag as Tuchel was thought to be keen on the job.

However, it seems that talks between the German and the FA are more concrete than initially suspected.

Tuchel set for England return

The former Bayern Munich boss, who has been out of work since the end of last season, has made no secret of his desire to return to England in a managerial capacity, having thoroughly enjoyed his time at Chelsea, which saw him win the Champions League in 2021.

Sky confirms that talks between Tuchel and the FA are ongoing, adding the vital information that he is now the favourite for the job. The search for a replacement for Carsley has ‘accelerated’ in recent days due to his admission that he does not want the role permanently.

It is also stated that talks with Man City boss Guardiola did not go beyond an initial enquiry and that he is not seen as an ‘active candidate.’ Tuchel’s track record of winning trophies sees him ‘score highly’ on England’s shortlist of options.
