Thorup blasts referee after Augsburg draw: “He robbed us of two points”

Jess Thorup believes referee Sascha Stegemann “robbed” Augsburg of two points against Werder Bremen.

Augsburg kicked off the new Bundesliga season with a 2-2 draw against Werder Bremen at the WWK-Arena on Saturday.

However, according to Augsburg coach Jess Thorup, his team would have won the game if it wasn’t for a “bad decision” by referee Sascha Stegemann.

In the 77th minute, with the game level at 2-2, an Augsburg cross from the left struck the hand of Werder defender Anthony Jung, preventing the home side from finishing.

“He robbed us of two points,” Thorup fumed after the draw.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t win in the end because of a bad decision by the referee,” added the Dane.

Stegemann, who had seen the incident himself after the video assistant referee’s intervention, stood by his decision.

Augsburg, on the other hand, had little understanding for the call. Only a few days before the match, they had been given a lesson in the rules by the DFB, in which it was reiterated that it is always a penalty when an outstretched arm extends the body.

“What am I supposed to tell my players now? He looks at it and doesn’t give a penalty,” commented Thorup.
