Liverpool are set for a big summer.

The arrival of Arne Slot will not only herald a new era in the Anfield dugout but the Dutchman and the club’s new recruitment team are set to shake up the side to provide the new boss with the means required to challenge for the Premier League again next season.

Against West Ham on Saturday, Liverpool again failed to claim victory, once more being undone by a lack of concentration on set pieces just as against Everton in the Merseyside Derby. It is evident that one of the big problem areas that will need to be fixed in the summer is the defence.

The Reds have been linked with a host of options, ranging from Goncalo Inacio to Marc Guehi, who is looking increasingly likely to leave Crystal Palace. Another name reportedly on Liverpool’s shortlist is Willian Pacho and the Eintracht Frankfurt defender appeared to give Reds fans some hope that he would be keen to join.

Liverpool fans on social media were quick to notice that Pacho had liked a fan edit on Instagram reporting the news that Slot is on his way to Anfield. Given that Pacho has no personal connection to the Dutchman, supporters took this to mean that the Ecuador international is looking forward to potentially working under him.

Wildcard defensive solution?

Liverpool fans also got excited by the social media activity of another defender, one who actually does have a connection to Slot because he is a current Feyenoord player. Versatile Dutch defender Lutharel Geetruida was in the stands for Liverpool’s match against the Hammers and posted a picture from the London Stadium.

Could he be a wildcard option for the Reds? It is possible. The 23-year-old is a sought-after commodity and it has been rumoured for some time that he is set to leave Rotterdam this summer. Heavily linked with RB Leipzig in the past, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if he were to get a move to a Premier League side.

Whether he is good enough for Liverpool is, of course, a different question. However, his versatility certainly makes him an attractive option and could offer Slot a lot of tactical flexibility. Geertruida can feature centrally and at right-back. Signing him could perhaps indicate Trent Alexander-Arnold’s full-time move into midfield.
