The Reds had hoped to keep hold of Van Dijk, who along with Alexander-Arnold and Mo Salah, make a superstar trio out of contract in the summer.

Now reports in Spain indicate that the Netherlands international defender has accepted a lucrative contract offer to leave Anfield, Fichajes reports.

Paris Saint-Germain are ready to invest heavily in the 33-year-old to secure his arrival.

Van Dijk has a two-year deal waiting for him at Parc des Princes with the option of another season, according to the Spanish media.

The centre-back is set to earn an eye-watering salary in the French capital, with €80m on the table plus a signing bonus of €20m.

Liverpool fighting on for Van Dijk

Despite the revelation, Liverpool are still doing everything they can to extend Van Dijk’s expiring contract, yet it is claimed that recent disappointments, including the Champions League exit to Les Parisiens, have fuelled the veteran’s desire to leave the club.

He was spotted in the Anfield tunnel after the Reds were eliminated from Europe speaking to PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and sporting director Luis Campos, although it was subsequently claimed there were no transfer talks involved.

Since his arrival in 2018, for which Liverpool paid almost €85m, Van Dijk has become a mainstay at the club. He played a crucial role in winning the Champions League in 2019, followed by triumphs in the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and the 2020 Premier League title. This season, he looks set to win another English title and he remains a key player under manager Arne Slot.

But Van Dijk, whose contract expires this summer, seems to be opting for a new adventure.

“The central defender thinks it is time for a change,” Spanish media report.

Although he has a strong bond with the club and the fans, the recent lack of major successes has apparently affected his motivation. This puts him in the ideal position to leave as a free agent, without Liverpool receiving a transfer fee.
