Wayne Rooney was known for being a funnyman during his glittering football career and the Manchester United and England legend has left his new set of team-mates in hysterics as he diversifies his portfolio since retiring.

On Sunday, Rooney – who is looking to return to management since being sacked as Birmingham boss in January – was announced as the latest star signing for EA Sports FC Pro Club Girth N Turf – which was founded by YouTubers Angry Ginge and Yung Filly.

And that evening, Rooney made his debut for the club but it wasn’t his gaming skills that caught the eye during the live stream.

After playing, Rooney stated his desire to play again in the future, saying: ‘If yous [sic] want us back I’ll be back,’ – to which Yung Filly said yes straight away too.

However, the 38-year-old was quickly met with a joking jibe from Angry Ginge who declared: ‘You can come back tomorrow, mate. Don’t be s*** again.’

This caused Rooney to respond with a light-hearted jab of his own as he hit back with: ‘Ah, you ginger ****!’.

Stunned by Rooney’s reply, it caused instant laughter by those on it in disbelief at Rooney’s cutting remark.

Rooney is the latest sporting star to have represented Girth N Turf, with teenage darts sensation Luke Littler another to have played Pro Clubs online for them.

Sunday’s activity concluded a weekend for Rooney where he was due to make his punditry debut for Match of the Day before having to withdraw due to injury.

He was in line to make his debut on the iconic BBC show on Saturday but was forced to pull out, with Martin Keown filling in for him.

And the former Everton striker revealed he had to cancel his appearance from the show after suffering an injury while on holiday.

Rooney wrote on X: ‘Gutted not to be making my debut on the iconic @BBCMOTDshow tonight, it’s something I have wanted to do since I was little.

‘Unfortunately I have sustained a painful back injury during a holiday with my family but I look forward to being part of the team in the near future.

‘Good luck to Gary Lineker and the guys for tonights [sic] show and see you soon.’

Host of the show Lineker responded by saying: They’ll be other opportunities. Get fit soon.’

Since retiring in 2021, Rooney has managed Derby, MLS side DC United and had an ill-fated stint at Championship club Birmingham City.

He was sacked by the Blues in January after less than three months in charge, and is currently taking a break from the game to be with his family.

Rooney is keen to get back on the touchline soon, though, and has been linked with a possible move to Saudi Arabia to follow in the footsteps of his ex-international team-mate Steven Gerrard.

The England appeared as a pundit for TNT Sports last month for their coverage of Manchester United’s win over Everton.

He was also a pundit in the studio as BBC covered Manchester United’s victory against Nottingham in the FA Cup in February
