What is the biggest win in Premier League history? Three clubs share record

Sheffield United suffered their largest league defeat in their 134-year history on Sunday, but at least it isn’t a Premier League record.

The Blades were shabby from start to finish on Sunday as they succumbed to an 8-0 thrashing at home to Newcastle.

As well as being a new low for Sheffield United, the match saw eight different goalscorers scored without an own goal being scored – which had never happened in the Premier League before.

Fortunately for the Yorkshire club they didn’t succumb to the worst margin of defeat in the 31-year history of the Premier League.

What is the biggest win in Premier League history?

The biggest margins of victory in the Premier League is shared between three clubs that have hit nine goals without conceding.

Manchester United remain the only team to have done it twice, having torn Ipswich and Southampton to shreds 26 years apart.

The Saints embarrassingly are also the only side to have been on the receiving end of two 9-0 drubbings.

And former Southampton manager Ralph Hassenhuttl has the unwanted feat of being in charge for both humiliating losses.

Liverpool were the previous team to have accomplished the coveted 9-0, having put Bournemouth to the sword in August.

In only the third game of the season, the Cherries found themselves 5-0 down by half-time like Spurs, but shipped another four after, in what proved to be Scott Parker’s final game in charge.

Paul Scharner’s second-half consolation for Wigan was the only blotch on the 2009/10 Tottenham side that smashed the Latics.
