Why rock royalty Jack White from the White Stripes was serenaded by adoring football fans in Melbourne

White Stripes frontman Jack White was all smiles on Sunday after he was serenaded by Melbourne Victory football fans at AAMI Park.

White, 49, is currently on Australian shores as part of his No Name tour – and took some time out to watch an A-League match in the flesh.

And supporters didn’t miss the opportunity to pay homage to White in the clash against Perth Glory.

‘I visited Melbourne Victory FC in their win at AAMI Park,’ he later posted on Instagram.

‘They also happen to chant [White Stripes’ iconic track] Seven Nation Army after every one of their goals. 

‘Interesting as the melody of that song was written at a soundcheck at the Corner Hotel venue a couple blocks away.’

In April this year, violinist Evangeline Victoria went viral following her spine-tingling performance of the 2003 rock classic before an A-League Men’s Melbourne derby.

Victoria’s rendition of The White Stripes’ bumper tune had the crowd in raptures, and the vision also featuring a backing band quickly exploded online, with more than 2.1 million TikTok views.

Meanwhile on the pitch, goals from Zinedine Machach and Adama Traore sealed a comfortable 2-0 win for the hosts on Sunday.

Patrick Kisnorbo’s Victory sit two points behind ladder leaders Auckland, and next have the bye.

They return to action in the Christmas derby against Melbourne City on December 21, while 11th-placed Perth host Newcastle on December 13.

Having outplayed Perth from the opening whistle, Kisnorbo credited the tireless nature of his team.

‘I’ve always been a big advocate for hard work as a collective,’ he said.

‘That second goal we scored, it was a great collective effort. It was a great pass from [Nikolaos] Vergos and a great finish from Adama [Traoré]. 

‘It was a collective goal but obviously Adama does the hardest thing and scores it so we are very happy.’
