Borussia Dortmund started the brighter of the two sides, with Maximilian Beier striking the post in the 14th minute thanks to being through one-on-one.

This could’ve been his first goal in yellow and black for Dortmund.

Just minutes later, BVB’s Jamie Bynoe-Gittens also came close but failed to score. Wolfsburg’s Mohamed Anoura and multiple teammates tried their luck around the half hour mark but were unsuccessful.

Towards the end of the first half, this pressure from die Wölfe continued as Joakim Mæhle was presented with a chance which he couldn’t take.

Around the 60th minute, the tie heated up with both sides putting in some rash challenges and Maximilian Arnold receiving a yellow card.

Julian Brandt came close with an outside of the box effort in the 70th but it didn’t trouble Kamil Grabara.

Nearly scoring the winner, Jonas Wind had two top chances following a free kick played in the box in the last five minutes.

Despite eight minutes added time, neither side was able to score, and the game went to extra time.

In the 92nd minute, Wolfsburg’s Tiago Tomás hit the bar despite putting everything into his effort off the cross.

Maximilian Arnold was very lucky not to go off for a second yellow card in the 94th minute due to a tactical foul.

With tempers flaring both on the benches and the pitch, referee Daniel Siebert managed to keep some sort of hold on the game.

Despite Serhou Guirassy being through in on goal in the 98th minute, he was flagged for a foul on Wolfsburg’s Koulierakis whilst running towards Wolfsburg’s box.

Wolfsburg had a close call for a penalty not awarded in the 100th minute as Salih Özcan went down.

Just a minute later, Dortmund had back-to-back shots blocked in the box following a corner.

Joakim Mæhle had another shot just before the break in extra time, but this attempt was a long way off the mark.

The 110th minute provided a huge chance for Wolfsburg where Jonas Wind was unable to convert in the air from a cross.

Four minutes later, the Dortmund players were furious as the ball hit a Wolfsburg hand in the box.

Daniel Siebert, however, did not blow the whistle and without VAR being used in the second round it wasn’t awarded.

After a long wait, the game finally was gifted its first goal with Jonas Wind netting in the 116th minute to put Wolfsburg 1-0 up.

A minute before the end, Dortmund’s Bensebaini brought down Tomás to concede a free kick dangerously close to the penalty box.

The game ended 1-0 for Wolfsburg, with the result piling the pressure on BVB coach Nuri Sahin.
