Gary Neville is feeling more optimistic about Man United this season but insists injuries cannot be an excuse if it turns out to be another disappointing campaign.

United host Fulham in the opening game of the Premier League season on Friday night and their fans will be hoping it is the start of a much more positive campaign than last time around.

The Red Devils are coming off the back of a season that was blighted by injuries and off the field problems, culminating in their lowest ever finish in the Premier League (eighth).

Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of the Fulham clash, Neville said: ‘injuries can’t be an excuse for United this season.

‘You are either signing the wrong players or doing the wrong training, that has to be removed as an excuse.

He continued: ‘I feel more optimistic because of the changes at the top and the negligence has been disrupted.

‘They have spent on the training ground but got some serious footballers in who are not going to make the same basic mistakes, the profile of player that has been signed is very different.’

Fellow club legend Roy Keane also had his say on his former club.

‘They cannot perform like they did last year, cant be finishing eighth, it is up to the players to show some personality and skill.’
