Man United suffered an early blow ahead of their crunch Champions League clash against Galatasaray after their Under 19 side lost 1-0 in the corresponding UEFA Youth League fixture.

Baran Demiroglu’s goal was enough for the Turkish giants to down United in a game that was played in torrential rain, with biblical showers sweeping Istanbul ahead of tonight.

The UEFA Youth League is an Under 19 competition for the academy sides of those in the Champions League, with United’s youngsters also in a group with Bayern Munich and FC Copenhagen.

Several Red Devils starlets featured in the match at the Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stadium, including goalkeeper Elyh Harrison and Jack Fletcher, son of former United midfielder and current technical director Darren.

Despite the biblical conditions, Mail Sport understands there are no suggestions tonight’s match between the senior teams will be called off.

The defeat in testing conditions leaves United’s Under 19s – who are coached by Travis Binnion – bottom of their group with just four points from five games.

Copenhagen are the surprise leaders with 10 points, with Bayern and Galatasaray level on six each.

The attention now turns to this evening, with United’s senior side also in a difficult position in their group.

Three disastrous defeats have left them bottom, one point behind Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen.

They must win in Turkey to keep their qualification hopes in their own hands.

A draw wouldn’t eliminate them, but it would leave them relying on other results on the final matchday and they would also be required to beat Bayern.

If they lose against the Turkish giants, they will be out. Even if they won both games and Copenhagen beat Bayern and Galatasaray, they would similarly be eliminated.
