Manchester United will battle their rivals to sign one of the most in-form players in the Premier League in January and solve a problem position for Erik ten Hag.

The Red Devils have had an underwhelming start to the new season, winning just twice in their opening five games and sitting with a neutral goal difference after five goals scored and conceded.

Part of United’s slow start has come down to injuries, with a host of player still unavailable to Ten Hag, particularly in defence.

At left-back, United have continued to alternate between Diogo Dalot and summer signing Noussair Mazraoui, both of whom are natural right-backs.

Luke Shaw is still yet to play this season after picking up a calf injury during the summer, with United hopeful of a return next month, while Tyrell Malacia continues to be a long-term absentee after more than a year out.

The unreliable fitness of United’s left-backs has convinced the club to strengthen the position and The Sun report that Fulham’s Antonee Robinson could be a target in the January transfer window.

Why Man Utd could have edge over Liverpool in Robinson chase

Robinson has been a standout performer for Fulham since joining the club in 2020 and the 27-year-old has continued his fine form into the new season, with two assists in the first five games.

The USA international has previously been tracked by Manchester City but Liverpool could now be United’s biggest rivals for his signature as they search for a long-term replacement for Andrew Robertson.

Robinson still has four years remaining on his contract at Craven Cottage and has so far not shown much desire to leave, meaning he could cost a significant amount for any side.

However, Fulham signed Ryan Sessegnon in the summer, who has also enjoyed a spell at left-back, and United’s need for an immediate option at left-back could convince Robinson to join, turning Liverpool down in the process.
