Manchester United are all set to appoint Ruben Amorim as their new head coach, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Portuguese tactician will replace Erik ten Hag and interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy in the Man Utd dugout. Ten Hag was sacked on Monday after overseeing the Red Devils’ worst-ever start to a Premier League season.

Hours later news broke that the club’s new INEOS chiefs were already in talks with Amorim and Sporting CP over a deal to appoint the 39-year-old. Amorim quickly gave his verbal assent to the move, having been keen on a Premier League switch for some time.

Though Amorim has a €20 million release clause, there is an agreement with Sporting that allows him to leave for just €10m, which is the compensation Man Utd will now pay the Portuguese champions.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Man Utd have informed Sporting that they will go through with the transfer, with the latter subsequently providing formal communication to the media and the Securities Market Commission. This means that the deal is, essentially, done.

Portuguese media reports that Amorim will pen a three-year deal at Old Trafford and Man Utd are determined to have him already on the sideline for the weekend’s clash with Chelsea.

Man Utd appoint Amorim

In Amorim, Man Utd have landed one of the most highly-rated up-and-coming young coaches in European football. The 39-year-old is a two-time Portuguese champion, having ended a league title drought that lasted for more than a decade at Sporting.

Amorim has nurtured some of the continent’s best players during his four years in charge in Lisbon and some will potentially follow him to Old Trafford.

Earlier this year, Amorim was in talks with Liverpool and West Ham and even travelled to London, but ultimately his dream of coaching in the Premier League had to be postponed.

Now, that dream is at last set to become true, with Amorim talking the reins at Old Trafford. Perhaps he can finally be the man to get Man Utd out of their post-Sir Alex Ferguson rut.
