This was simply the latest setback in what has been a catastrophic season for the Old Trafford side, whose last shot at silverware will come in the Europa League, in which they face Real Sociedad on Thursday.

Already there have been reports that United are seriously considering Amorim’s future, despite an estimated €24 million cost to sack the former Sporting CP boss, who only took command in November.

Xavi has been touted as a replacement for the 40-year-old, with the ex-Barcelona boss having been seriously sounded out over the prospect of taking the job in the autumn.

The legendary midfielder considered his options but chose not to takeover mid-season, believing that Ruud van Nistelrooy would remain in interim charge until the summer.

Xavi wanted by Milan

United are still interested in the Spaniard, but their window of opportunity to get him in the Old Trafford dugout could be close.

AC Milan are eager to see Xavi on their bench as Sergio Conceicao’s future at San Siro comes under question following a poor run of results that continued as his side were beaten 2-1 at home by Lazio on Sunday, Fichajes reports.

Like Amorim, Conceicao has struggled to turn the Rossoneri’s form around, though his struggles have not been as profound. He has picked up eight wins from 17 matches, although only four of these have come in Serie A.

With Milan slipping down to ninth in the standings over the weekend, having suffered three defeats in succession, Xavi is coming increasingly into focus at San Siro, and it seems that if Man Utd really want him, they will have to act soon.
