Scotland’s Lewis Ferguson looks set to miss out on Euro 2024 after Bologna confirmed that the attacking midfielder has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

The Bologna captain was substituted during Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Monza and will now need an operation on his knee.

‘Devastated with today’s news but that’s life,’ Ferguson wrote on Instagram.

‘I will do everything to come back better and stronger than before. Thank you all for the support. See you soon.’

Ferguson took part in both of Scotland’s friendlies last month and was expected to be named in the 23-man squad for the Euros.

Scotland  will take part in the first game of the tournament as they face hosts Germany.

The news will come as a blow to manager Steve Clarke, whose team will also play Hungary and Switzerland in the group stage.

Ferguson has helped put Bologna on the brink of Champions League qualification with six goals and four assists in Serie A this season.

His team sit fourth, four points clear of fifth-placed Roma who have a game in hand.
