UCL Preview: PSG hoping to overcome Barcelona lead

Paris Saint-Germain are hoping to create history when they visit Barcelona’s temporary home at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys on Tuesday evening, by trying to overturn a 3-2 lead earned by the Catalans at the Parc des Princes last week. The first leg certainly lived up to the hype, as a brace from former Rennes man Raphina and a header from Andreas Christensen saw Barça take a slender lead in the tie.

Whilst the loss was a blow to Enrique’s side, all is not lost. Les Parisiens managed to react to going behind at 0-1 down via an emphatic finish from former Barça man Ousmane Dembélé, then taking the lead via Vitinha only several minutes later – a sign PSG can be dangerous on the attack even if Kylian Mbappé is not playing at his very best.

Luis Enrique believes PSG will complete comeback

Luis Enrique – the architect of Barça’s famous Remontada win against PSG in 2017 – could become the first ex-Barcelona manager to eliminate the Blaugrana from the Champions League. “PSG have never come back to win after losing a first leg, but [Tuesday] is the day,” said Enrique in his pre-match press conference, adding “We have a very united group of players, in which there are no egos”.

Christensen’s header in the first leg was the 50th goal scored in the 14 previous competitive meetings between the two sides. According to Opta, these have featured an average of 3.6 goals per game. Expect goal-mouth action between the two sides on Tuesday evening as PSG try to make history against Barcelona.
